Caretaking pillars- Important facts parents of autistic people need to know

Published on August 20, 2024

No parent is ever prepared to receive an autism diagnosis for their child.

No parent feels ready before they take their first autism course for parents.

No parent feels prepared for what is to come.

And that is okay.

Every parent wants their child to be healthy and happy, and a developmental delay diagnosis can cause panic in a family. Confusion, insecurity, and emotional reactions are common, and as a parent you don’t need to beat yourself up for feeling certain emotions.

What is important to remember is that - Every child comes with unique strengths and weaknesses, and a parent needs to realize that an autism diagnosis is not the end of the world!

Even without autism, there is no such thing as a “perfectly normal child.”

As the caregiver of an autistic child, you need to remember to focus on the positive. Like all other children, kids on the autism spectrum also respond very well to positive reinforcement.

Patience is another key element when it comes to parenting a child diagnosed with ASD. There is no “one size fits all” remedy here.

You will probably try many different techniques, therapies, and approaches while you figure out what works best for your child.

Never give in to feelings of discouragement or get disillusioned, if they’re not responding well to a specific treatment method or intervention.

Do not shy away from seeking support. They say it takes a village to raise a child. Children on the autism spectrum are no different. Seek support from other professionals, and friends, who may be experienced in caring for those on the spectrum

Create an ecosystem of friends and family who understand your child’s diagnosis.

If your autistic child’s needs are becoming too consuming for you, don’t feel guilty about having another caregiver assist you or look after your child while you take breaks for periods inside the home or outside.

Always remember, it’s in your child’s best interests to have a parent whose mental health is not compromised.

An emotionally and physically burnt-out parent is not a functional parent. If you are happy and healthy, the chances of your child being the same rise exponentially.

The following are some active steps you help your little munchkin optimize their abilities -

1. Autism Courses for Parents

2. Autism Certification

3 factors to look out for while choosing an autism center are: the right certifications, accreditation, and reputation.

However, as the primary caregiver, it’s also equally important for a parent to do certified autism courses, so they have the correct day-to-day skills that are required to help their child reach their full potential.

India Autism Center offers several certified courses that will make sure you have all the information you need to be the best parent to your autistic child!

India Autism Center stands out in setting up one of the best autism care and research facilities in India, focusing not only on the autistic individual but also personally invested in providing the best emotional and knowledge-based support to their families.

3. Residential schools for autism

These are boarding schools specializing in educational and rehabilitation programs tailored to address the unique learning styles of children suffering from developmental disorders.

At India Autism Center, we are both proud and blessed to be able to offer you the best residential community for autism-impacted individuals and their families.

Our upcoming residential program will offer assisted living for autistic individuals to live independantly or supported living for them to live on the campus with their parents and families. Families now have the option to move into a home on campus, which the autistic person can return to, after attending the daycare program, and live happily with their families, without the pressures of long daily commutes. We offer a city in 52 acres - food and canteen services, recreational facilities, and medical facilities for the autistic individual and their families in a safe and secure environment.

Always remember that behind a child who believes in themselves, was a parent who believed first.
