Neurodivergent students and families enjoying an autism-friendly Durga Puja event organized by India Autism Center and MassArt in Kolkata.

India Autism Center and MassArt’s Autism Friendly Durga Puja Parikrama

Durga Puja is Kolkata’s biggest celebration. But for many neurodivergent individuals, the crowds and chaos can feel overwhelming.

That’s why we, at the India Autism Center (IAC), partnered with MassArt to create a truly autism-friendly event, one where every child could enjoy the spirit of the festival without anxiety or sensory overload.

The Puja Parikrama 2025 welcomed over 200 neurodivergent students and their parents, turning Kolkata’s iconic pandal-hopping ritual into a safe, structured, and joyful experience.

An Inclusive Celebration, Thoughtfully Designed

The event was designed around one core belief: inclusion should never be an afterthought. Participants traveled in designated buses to visit some of Kolkata’s most popular Durga Puja pandals.

Each bus carried trained volunteers, sensitized through workshops by our Training Academy. They ensured that every participant felt supported, calm, and included. From managing sensory overloads to offering emotional reassurance, the volunteers were the quiet heroes behind the scenes.

A Safe, Structured Celebration

Participants visited some of Kolkata’s most famous Durga Puja pandals, each prepped to provide a safe, low-sensory environment. The journey was smooth, the smiles were genuine, and the sense of belonging was unmistakable.

Families from Garden Reach Rehabilitation Institute and Amrit Somani Memorial Center (ASMC) joined the celebration, turning what could have been a challenging day into a heartwarming shared memory.

The Bottom Line

At India Autism Center, we believe inclusion begins with empathy. That small steps like these can lead to big cultural change.

This autism-friendly initiative by India Autism Center and MassArt sets a new benchmark for accessible community events in Kolkata. Here’s to many more celebrations where every child gets to belong.
